Domain Name Impact On Google Ranking
The purpose of this article is to report on my Dollar James blog about my analysis on whether a domain name can influence or not your ranking in Google search engine. I am not too sure whether I will be able to conclude on something reliable or not, but I will give it a go, as I know there has been a tough debate about this domain name issue for several years. So how did all this happen? And how will I proceed?
After creating my blog Logicinstrument.com, I saw that my new blog was quickly well ranked under Google as I was already on the first page after only 3 days for the Google search “Logic Instrument”. If you search for these terms under Google.com you will see that there are over 14 million results. What is quite extraodinary is that a few days after my blog creation, my blog is already ranked in TOP 10 of Google for the term Logic Instrument. So maybe the domain name has a big impact on my ranking? Thats what I first thought when I saw this. Meanwhile after searching a bit, I found under the Google adword keyword tool that there were only about 3,000 searches per month worldwide for these terms. Therefore this probably means that in terms of SEO there is little competition. But I am unable to check this. As a consequence I decided to create several other blogs, with good domain names and which have larger seaches per month.
The blogs that I have created are: pda-handhelds.com, eyes-surgery.com and handheldscomputers.com ! I chose topics that i knew well, handhelds & pda and eye surgery. As you may have noticed I have two domain names with a ‘-’ in between two words, and one without. This is basically to see if this has an impact or not on your ranking. As from what I read online, it appears that in some cases Google considers that if you have the words.com domain name (ex: logicinstrument.com or handheldscomputers.com), they will consider it as the website where the concept or word comes from. In other words its as if you were the brand, or that you owned the word. But I cannot validate this yet. This is why I created these domaines, in order to see if the domain name had an impact on the SEO and on your Google ranking. I will keep you updated with my analysis after a few days or weeks.

Top 10 Link Building Techniques
Everyone who has a blog or website, knows that promoting their blog is necessary in order to get visitors. One of the main steps in getting traffic and which is important to be well ranked in search engine is to do link building with other websites. If you do not work on link building you will have difficulties improving your ranking in Google and other search engines. So from what i have learnt and read on the net here are 10 link building techniques that are most commonly used.
1. Link Exchange: This is simple it consists in contacting a webmaster and offering him to link to his site and vice versa. Nevertheless this technique is no longer well seen by Google if you simply link a page A from one site, to page B of the other. It is necessary to have a triangular link exchange system in order to be well seen by Google.
2. Article Marketing: This consists in writing articles which link to your website and submitting them to articles websites. This is good to get high relevance links if you make sure to use your website’s keywords in the article.
3. Blog Comment Posting: This method consists in leaving a comment on another blog including a link to your website. This is a good technique if you post quality comments on a highly visited blog. Furthermore make sure that the blog is dofollow (if it is not a link to your site will count for nothing) by using the firefox plugin (nofollow). Also yet again make sure you post on blogs which are relevant to your website!
4. Forum Posting & Signatures: Forum posting can be a nice technique to promote your blog. You simply post a thread where you mention your blog or website or include links to them in your signature. For SEO this technique has little impact as considering the amount of outgoing links, the value of one is rather small. Nevertheless it is a good technique to get basic direct traffic originating from the forum.
5. Press Release: This consists in releasing a statement on sites such as technorati including a link to your blog. What is good with this method and which is well considered by search engines is that it relies on the popularity of what you share and what people think depending on whether it is relevant and interesting or not.
6. Social Bookmarking: Social bookmarking with sites such as the well known Digg or Stumble Upon is a good method to get traffic and quality links if what you submitted becomes viral. Nevertheless there are so many links submitted in these social websites that it gets difficult to submit a link which will be on their first page. But you still get some traffic if you submit niche stuff as there is less competition!
7. Directory Submission: Directory submission is very useful at first in order to be sure that they will crawl your website once it is updated. Nevertheless this is usually only done at the beginning. Once of you are submitted to major search engines and to a good amount of alternative ones this will be ok. This will not increase your page rank or what so ever.
8. Posting Shock Articles: This consists in writing articles on your blog about hot topics and having a very aggressive or negative/anti approach so that people will disagree with you and will link to your blog contesting what you are saying. This method should only be used a few times otherwise your blog reputation will decrease.
9. Word of Mouth: This is simply talking about your blog to your friends, relatives and hope that they will link to your blog on their website. This is slow and difficult but can become very good if your blog and articles are interesting and are of good quality.
10. Buying Links: I do not recommend this method even though many people use it. It consists in contacting a blog webmaster and offer to pay him money in exchange of a link or article about your website. Even though this can give excellent results it is often rather expensive especially on high traffic blogs or website.
If you use a bit of each of these techniques you should be able to increase your ranking in search engine but also get more traffic. These are the basics i use and would recommend using for any blog or website to promote! Hope you find it useful!

Many of you probably have some blogger (blogspot) blogs. For those who have, and for those who dont either, you probably find classic blogger templates awful! Well you are right they do look really awful! But did you know that it is possible to have the top wordpress themes also adapted for blogger? Yes you can have the WP-Premium template on blogger too!
With these top quality templates you can have a nice looking free blog! You can either use it for your main blog (even though i prefere wordpress + domain name for my main blog), but i would recommend using them for your adsense blogspot blogs! It will give them a totaly new fresh look and will certainly attract more visitors and increase your adsense click rate.

Everyone would like to know how to make money while blogging. Is it easy? how much can i make? What do i have to do? So many questions … and so many answers! … but no revenues come in! What the hell is happening? Why cant you make money?
Well i think there is no perfect solution on how to make money while blogging. I mean it is not only using pre-made google adsense blogs, doing seo, finding good keywords or even writting interesting posts! It is also about being there at the right moment with the right idea so that people will come and read your blog! Think about all the factors that need to be taken into consideration? Readers from the US will surely read your blog either at lunch if they have time or in the evening, so maybe posting in the evening in order to be in the latest blog post of websites such as digg.com is a good idea ? well probably, but it wont be enough! The secrets of Social Bookmarking: You may wonder how to get your blog noticed? How to get huge traffic to your website? Are you finding it difficult? Well in a certain way it is. Nevertheless certain techniques such as Social Bookmarking help you to gain traffic to your blog.
What are Social Bookmarking websites? As definied by wikipedia, “Social bookmarking sites are a popular way to store, classify, share and search links through the practice of folksonomy techniques on the Internet or Intranet.
Have you a few examples of social bookmarking websites? How do they work? The most known is Digg! Digg is a large community, where as a member you have the possibility to add a summary of your blog/website articles with a link to them. Your short article summary can the be accessed by all members of the social bookmarking website. With Digg for example, when someone finds your article interesting they can digg it. The more poeple digg your blog article the more people will have a look at it. Nevertheless in order to get digged you need to submit a link to a unique quality article otherwise people will not be interested. So beware, submitting simple non interesting articles will not bring you traffic. FURL or del.icio.us are other social bookmarking websites that are good.
Are there any restrictions or moderations to links and articles submitted? With Digg, FURL or del.icio.us there is no real moderation unless you are spamming. This is a real good point, as you can therefore submit or suggest any article or link being sure it will be submitted! Other sites such as Slashdot have a heavy moderation system which is really annoying so prefer the 3 cited above.
What types of submitions will bring me traffic? I would recommend you to submit your best posts only. Your weak posts even if submited will not bring you traffic. Keep the weak ones for your regular blog readers. Basically the more quality content your post have the more popular it will be and the more traffic you will have. The more traffic you have the more chances you have of making money with Google Adsense! Dont submit spam posts or your posts will be deleted/burried and your reputation will be bad.
All in all Social Bookmarking is an essential part in order to have your blog successful and attract readers. I am currently working on getting more traffic, and i have had the best results while submitting quality articles through Digg. Give it a go!
Google internship!
Over a week ago i sent my CV and cover letter to Google through their online system. I am currently searching for a 6 month internship in finance/sales or marketing starting in July 2007. With Google i postulated for Assistant Product Manager.
When applying, they indicated that they would quickly review my demand and that a member of their staff would answer back in the next few days. Unfortunately i must admit that i am disapointed as i have not received any reply yet!
I guess that they have many demands, but my CV is rather interesting as i already have good work experience (Project manager in a small IT company) and my skills and abilities fullfilled all of Google requirements as i have a solid academic background in marketing and advertising. I am still waiting for an answer even though i am rather pessimist whether they will answer back or not. Maybe I contacted them to early or too late ?
Luckily i am in contact with well known finance companies for a job in finance (trader). I have always dreamt of being a trader as i know it is a well paid job, but also very interesting! Wish me luck !
Business launch ?
On several occasions with my friend and room mate Adrien we have thought of setting up our own online business. Last year we launched a custom made “High yield investment program monitor” website. Unfortunately even though our site was better made & designed than competitors it failed because we did not have enough funds to advertise it. We also created a Hyip script (Pro Hyip Script) which we still have and which we are thinking of selling soon.
Yesterday, i received a phone call from Adrien telling me he had found a new business idea ! I listened to him and must admit that i agreed with him regarding the potential of his idea. In fact his idea is based on a website concept i had launched last year but which had to be closed down for legal reasons. Unfortunately i am unable to give more details about it for the moment as we do not want people or competitors to steal our idea.
Nevertheless here are a few key elements we think are essential for students to create a fast successful online business:
- Privilege offering a service where your website is a platform where you put people in contact with each other in order to have a growing community. This is the best choice as your costs will be reduced as you will only have hosting to pay, and no local, stock or material costs.
- Make a business plan and send it to potential investors that would be willing to help you start your business. Another solution could be to ask the IT company creating your platform to invest in your business if they think it is worth it.
- Make sure you have enough funds available to launch some small advertising. Take into consideration the competition.
- Dont get upset if you do not respect your timetable objectives, it always takes you more time than you initially thought. Better spending more time and having a better product than trying to speed things up.
- Study carefuly competition, your target and try to adapt your product to the demand. The service you are offering is the clue to your success so make sure it has a potential by studying the market before.
- Make your platform clear and simple. In order to reduce costs, think about using low cost indian IT companies which do excellent work such as Agriya Infoway Ltd.

Facebook, Google or Yahoo ?
Three months ago Google bought Youtube the video sharing community for 1.65 billion dollars. But why did Google buy Youtube for such a large amount ? Well first of all simply because Youtube is one of the most visited and fastest growing website on the net. Google saw the possibility with Youtube to reach hundred of thousands of people. It was also a great opportunity to have a platform where they could use their well known advertising system “Google ads”. Another reason for this acquisition was to eliminate competition and especially Yahoo. This acquisition was really bad news for Yahoo which had recently launched its Yahoo ads. Yahoo is currently struggling updating its advertising system and making a commercial deal with frequently visited websites such as Youtube without Google swooping in.
For the moment most of the companies courted by Yahoo (MySpace, AOL, Youtube) found an agreement with Google. As explained in a recent article of the Times (UK), Yahoo only have $4 billion cash available whereas Google have at least $11 billion ! Maybe the solution for Yahoo to make a “come back” would be to acquire the well known “Facebook” social network platform. Yahoo have already made an offer of $900 million in September 2006, but it was refused due to the protesting of Facebook users (students). Apparantly Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg would be ready to sell Facebook for at least $2 billion. All in all, if Yahoo wants to acquire Facebook and come back in the race with Google, they will need to bring real money and hope that Google wont come with an enormous offer !

The only problem that could occur would be websites owners not willing to have ads in their videos … but ads are everywhere so i guess it will work !

Road to Success : How to become rich !
First of all, before attempting anything, i have decided to make sure my blog is fully ready and optimized for you visitors. Indeed i have understood that you, visitors, will be essential for me to help me reach my goals and be successful ! You will be able to advise me, criticize my attitudes and thoughts through the comment system that is implemented on Wordpress.
In order to keep my blog as clear as possible, i have chosen a simple Wordpress theme and made a custom header with a custom logo. As you may have seen, i have also optimized it in order to work with Google Adsense which i hope will help me cover my hosting expenditure. All in all i have a powerfull customized blog thanks to Wordpress and am ready to start my adventure to become rich ! We will soon discover whether it is possible for a student to make a living with a part time home job !
